Message from
Executive Director

Who should be a PTA member?

Everyone.  It is that simple.

Two years ago, I came on board as the Executive Director for the Michigan PTSA and, admittedly, I did not have a PTA background.  The history and mission of PTA were new to me and what I learned was both enlightening and encouraging.

PTA has played an instrumental role in many education advancements, laws, and setting standards for child health and safety issues.  From the introduction of child labor laws to the establishment of kindergarten to the Salk Polio Vaccine trials, PTA has been on the forefront as a champion for children. Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School PTSA in Detroit Receives National PTA Take Your family to School Week Award

From hundreds of applications, National PTA rewarded 32 outstanding PTAs for their innovative initiatives to engage all families in their schools during Take Your Family to School Week.  With this week, PTA furthers its mission as schools build stronger partnerships with families and emphasize the link between parent involvement and student achievement.

National PTA representatives will visit several schools to personally present “big checks” and support the activities. Martin Luther King is one such school – National PTA CEO, Byron Garrett, will join PTSA members on February 9th as part of their Take Your Family to School Week program.

The timing of the week—in February—and the amount of the awards—$1,897—honor the day and year PTA was founded: February 17, 1897.

PTA Celebrates Founders Day February 17th

PTA has been advocating for children since 1897 and has accomplished many great things on behalf of children. Did you know:

  • In 1905 the National Congress of Mothers (PTA), formed a committee on juvenile court and probation work, and President T. Roosevelt granted the National Congress president’s request to endorse juvenile court and probation?
  • National PTA began a school bus safety program in 1936?
  • The federal school hot lunch program was created in 1946, due to efforts made by the National PTA?
  • National PTA began a massive HIV/AIDS awareness campaign in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, in 1987?
  • National PTA succeeded in getting content information included in the TV ratings system in 1997?
  • In 2001, within 24 hours of the September 11 attacks, PTA launched the Helping Your Children Cope with Tragedy website?

Public Relations

Highlighting Your PTA/PTSA

Public Relations Strategies

Public relations is implementing a strategy to get the word out about your PTA. Public relations is crucial to the success of the PTA. If your members don’t know what you are doing, how do you expect non-members to find out and want to join the PTA? When you communicate to those who support PTA and to those who are not members, everyone knows what PTA is and how it benefits children and their education. In the digital age of public relations, strategies for your PTA can take advantage of many Internet-based tools. Read more...

Membership Message from
Chuck Saylors, National PTA President

As you know, most PTAs hold only one membership campaign a year—in the fall.  I was interested to find our recently that our units who run more than one campaign a year have, on average, 20 percent more members? That’s because potential members have more opportunities to say “yes” to becoming a member. Here are some facts:

  • Nationwide, approximately 18 percent of PTA® members join in January and February.
  • Running membership campaigns more frequently helps remind our members (and potential members) that membership is everyone’s business, especially if you weave   membership into programs, activities, and general PTA work, too.
  • The months of January and February are not too late for parents to make a real impact in the current school year. Plus, those who join PTA in January and February will be ready to renew their membership the following school year.

This January and February, we are reprising the membership campaign theme “New Year… New Opportunities.” The theme plays on our optimism that the new year brings new opportunities to improve ourselves, our lives, and the world around us. For adults, the world in which they want to make a difference is largely defined by children and children’s success. We encourage you to ask parents, relatives, and friends to make it their number one resolution to be more involved in the education of their children. It’s a resolution they’ll want to keep, and they can easily do so by joining PTA. Read more...

Legislative/Children's Advocacy

A Message from Michigan PTSA Past President Sue BellowsCapital

Thank you to those of you who were able to participate in Michigan PTSA’s Statewide Bake Sale for Public Education on December 2nd.

I ask that you continue to support our future endeavors that will draw attention to the dismal state of affairs that is our state budget and the flawed processes that plan it.  If enough of us talk about the many, excruciating, cuts that school districts around our state are having to absorb, then perhaps we can effect change in that process.

We must not sit idle while people whose paychecks are not getting cut, whose health benefits are not being touched and whose taxes are much less that the average homeowner make cut after cut to school funding.
