Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School PTSA in Detroit Receives National PTA Take Your family to School Week Award
From hundreds of applications, National PTA rewarded 32 outstanding PTAs for their innovative initiatives to engage all families in their schools during Take Your Family to School Week. With this week, PTA furthers its mission as schools build stronger partnerships with families and emphasize the link between parent involvement and student achievement.
National PTA representatives will visit several schools to personally present “big checks” and support the activities. Martin Luther King is one such school – National PTA CEO, Byron Garrett, will join PTSA members on February 9th as part of their Take Your Family to School Week program.
The timing of the week—in February—and the amount of the awards—$1,897—honor the day and year PTA was founded: February 17, 1897.
Statewide “Bake Sale” for Public Education
Wednesday, December 2, 2009 – PTA units from across the state of Michigan, along with Cookies4MiKids, hosted a Bake Sale for Education in prominent areas in their community. The Michigan PTSA State Office took its bake sale to the steps of the Capitol Building in Lansing to voice its opposition to the current cuts to education funding in Michigan.
Michigan PTSA President, Mary DeYoung-Smith, at the Capitol Building in Lansing:
We were fortunate to have good weather and great enthusiasm from the parents and supporters who were at the Capitol on December 2nd to speak out for adequate funding for public education in Michigan. Members of the Michigan PTSA Board of Directors were joined by people from Southfield, Walled Lake, Dearborn, Saugatuck, Detroit, Ida, Northville, Royal Oak, Centerline, Lansing and more.
I greatly appreciate the parents from Royal Oak High School PTSA and their superintendent, Dr. Thomas Moline, for their great idea to have a "Bake Sale" to draw attention to this unacceptable situation.

Hazel Park PTA Council Spooktacular
The Hazel Park PTA Council held its 5th Annual Halloween Safety Night on Friday, October 23, 2009 at the Hazel Park High School. Children came dressed in costumes like Spiderman, Police Officers, Fire Fighters, Little Red Riding Hood, Little Mermaid and so many more. Over 300 guests enjoyed cider and donuts, a craft, guess the amount game, and Halloween Bingo. Families took the opportunity to participate in the Child ID Program provided by The Masonic Lodge #570. Valuable safety information to keep our families safe was available for parents. Ten lucky winners won a pumpkin, carving kit, and a flashlight. The evening ended with children trick-or-treating through the hallways.
