Membership Message fromMembership
Chuck Saylors,National PTA President

As you know, most PTAs hold only one membership campaign a year—in the fall.  I was interested to find our recently that our units who run more than one campaign a year have, on average, 20 percent more members? That’s because potential members have more opportunities to say “yes” to becoming a member. Here are some facts:

  • 1) Nationwide, approximately 18 percent of PTA® members join in January and February.
  • 2) Running membership campaigns more frequently helps remind our members (and potential members) that membership is everyone’s business, especially if you weave   membership into programs, activities, and general PTA work, too.
  • 3) The months of January and February are not too late for parents to make a real impact in the current school year. Plus, those who join PTA in January and February will be ready to renew their membership the following school year.

This January and February, we are reprising the membership campaign theme “New Year… New Opportunities.” The theme plays on our optimism that the new year brings new opportunities to improve ourselves, our lives, and the world around us. For adults, the world in which they want to make a difference is largely defined by children and children’s success. We encourage you to ask parents, relatives, and friends to make it their number one resolution to be more involved in the education of their children. It’s a resolution they’ll want to keep, and they can easily do so by joining PTA.

We applaud those states and units that are preparing to run campaigns in January and February, and ask that all of you consider joining them. Ask all of your units and members to make January and February a time to ask one relative, one friend, or one community member to join PTA.
Campaign materials and tips are online at pta.org/January.
