President's Message:

Two Important Bylaws Amendments Proposed

The Michigan PTSA Board of Directors is asking our members to consider two important bylaws amendments at our annual convention in April.

We are proposing a dues increase of $1.25, bringing the total membership dues for Michigan PTSA and National PTA to $5.00 per member, annually.  MPTSA dues have not been increased in 11 years and, due to inflation, we can no longer offer the services we provide without this adjustment.

There are many benefits of PTA membership.  PTA provides valuable information on parenting issues, education topics and legislation that affects children and families.  PTA Parent and PTA Takes Action are excellent e-newsletters available to members on these topics.

There is no other group that speaks on behalf of children and parents, besides PTA.  There is no other group that provides the support and quality programs that PTA offers to its members and local leaders.

It is important for Michigan PTSA to maintain our state office, our contact with our local PTA/PTSAs, workshops and trainings for members, and a voice in Lansing and Washington, D.C.

We are also proposing that Michigan PTSA return its name to Michigan PTA.  This decision was made to be more closely aligned with the rich history of PTA; we want to be connected in name to all those in PTA who have carried the torch of children’s advocacy for the past 113 years.

Our commitment to students on the board of the Michigan PTSA remains strong:  we have three positions on the state board for student representatives and a Vice President for Student Involvement.  PTA exists to work on behalf of all children!
